About the Preceptor Program
The professional student pharmacists at the Rangel School of Pharmacy attain and practice their skills with one of the largest preceptor network in the state of Texas, more than 1,100 members strong.
At least 39 percent of alumni are from South Texas, while 41 percent of graduates practice pharmacy in South Texas. More than 96 percent of graduates are licensed pharmacists. We continue to have at least 39 percent of current students from South Texas.
The Rangel School of Pharmacy is a member of the Texas Consortium on Experiential Programs.
The Role of a Preceptor
Pharmacy preceptors play in important role in the educational development of Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel School of Pharmacy students, from beginning first-year students through advanced fourth-year students. Multiple precepting opportunities exist through service learning, shadowing, clinical experiences and mentoring in order for the students to develop the attitudes, values and behaviors of professional pharmacists.
Preceptors:
- Are role models
- Share past pharmacy experiences
- Take an interest in the student’s education
- Offer guidance for career selection
- Are prospective employers
- TSBP licensed preceptors (three hours of preceptor CE every two years)
- The accreditation standards require pharmacy preceptors to interact significantly with students and to closely supervise students’ activities.
Preceptor Responsibilities
- Assess the student’s level and develop rotation activities suitable to their current abilities and the desired learning outcomes.
- Provide structure and develop meaningful rotation experiences for the student to allow progression and development.
- Stay abreast of current practice trends.
- Assist the school by evaluating student’s performance and documenting hours through the online monitoring system (CORE®) at the conclusion of every rotation.
- Communicate with the Rangel School of Pharmacy to address concerns and areas of need.

Become a Pharmacy Preceptor
Pharmacy preceptors play an important role in the educational development of Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel School of Pharmacy students, from beginning first-year students through advanced fourth-year students. Steps to become a preceptor
- Complete three (3) hours of preceptor CE.
- Complete and submit the Preceptor Certification Application to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP).
- Once approved as a preceptor by the TSBP, fill out the A&M Rangel School of Pharmacy Preceptor Information Form.
- Use Code - RSOP
- Upon receipt of the preceptor information form, OEE will create a user profile in the CORE® experiential program. A welcome email will be sent that contains user login information, instructions on how to use the experiential program, and instructions on how to access the preceptor orientation material. The onboarding process for new Texas A&M preceptors includes the completion of a short online orientation program.
Continuing Education for Preceptors
The professional development of our preceptors is a priority at the Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel School of Pharmacy. We are committed to offering continuing education material to meet the needs of our preceptors. We seek input from our community partners on topics of interest.
